I've read the IMBA study you mentioned, and was slightly surprised by the fact that they only recommended doing-up Tin Man and ruling out the other three trails because they extended out of the CP.

On the other hand, I do understand why the AFCD insists on keeping the 'historical trails' to hikers only as those trails are bound to attract many hikers.

A few years ago AFCD invited IMBA Trail Solutions to study 4 currently illegal trails to see which ones could be opened. IMBA won't recommend a trail be opened unless its entire course is within the park and I think 3/4 trails studied failed that basic requirement. Tin Man is the only one that was studied and lies entirely within Tai Lam CP so it an obvious choice for making legal but the problem with it is that it lies deep within the CP and is not easy to reach for the guys with the big bikes who prefer a shuttle to the top.

So one reason for the poll is to find out what trails riders really like and if they are illegal then find a way to get them opened perhaps by finding routes for them to stay entirely within the park. Some of our guys are working on this in their spare time and hope to come up with some proposed routes.

Trails that are completely out of consideration are those that are named (ie., Kap Lung) and any ancient trails with historical significance (like Yuen Tuen, aka Won Ton). These are hard AFCD guidelines.

I see, thanks Tom for explaining. What are the chances of AFCD agreeing to open (some) of the illegal trails in the CP area? Or are they content that the existing trails are already adequate or long enough?

The hope is to gain a better understanding of local riders skill level, trail preferences (illegal or legal) and what kinds of new trails they want see.

We plan to use this information when we discuss trail priorities with the govt (AFCD) to help them prioritize the projects ahead, particularly in Tai Lam CP.

Just out of curiosity, how will data collected be utilised?
