I've tried the sneaky switchback - it's so steep and the turns are so tight, I found it impossible to stay on the bike all the way down - I prefer the Rocky Horror. I wouldn't want to get rid of the drop-offs, but the root section is so rutted and bombed out now that it ruins the chance of launching off the small step downs for all but the most insane riders on dual crown monsters.

There's a sneaky switchback if you go straight, past the 'no bikes' sign, but it isn't any 'easier' than rocky horror - eventually it could be improved / graded to descend to that point, and come out right out the bottom, from where the Inca starts.

I think you are referring to ROCKY HORROR, and its named rightly so.

Sharp left hand turn. Long loose rock steps, slippery roots and then the large rock drop off.

If you mange that and your nerves/body still intact you have a few more large roots and the last big step or run off to negotiate.

It is highly dangerous and should not be attempted if you are a begginer. It seems that its been erroded quite a lot since you first started riding it. Ive only ever ridden it in its current state  and get chills everytime.

Something should be done but it remains one of the great features and I would hate to lose it.

Yep - appreciate it's not part of the Tai Lam trail - just didn't want to start a new thread. I certainly wouldn't want to reduce the fun/fear factor of these technical sections, but that particular short stretch has become so beaten up that only the best riders can negotiate it without putting their feet down, especially when its wet - I would just like to improve the flow.

I used to fly down there but now I have to pick my way through deep holes between the roots, all the way trying to avoid toppling 30 foot down the slope. They don't have to completely sanitize it, but filling in the deeper holes with some rocks and soil would reduce the risk of accident considerably whilst maintaining the fun factor.

That bit of trail is part of the Ho Pui run though, nothing to do with Tai Lam... though you do end up there (Tai Lam) if you ride the whole thing (Ho Pui Reservoir contour then Ho Pui Pass). IMBA currently class most of that as "Double Black" (Stupid :silly: ) and I think the plan is to have it as "safe" Black with chicken-runs of "Blue". That trail is a lot of work though and some sections are steep however you change it. Though in most cases it's getting rid (hurrah!) of the old concrete and rebuilding with large stones to anchor/protect stuff.

Yeah, I will try to get our Doc module back up. Our site was attacked and we were forced into an emergency upgrade. Not everything migrated smoothly and I have been ironing things out when I have the time.

Our relationship with the AFCD has never been better. Our team met with them last month to discuss plans for trails amongst other things. They are taking a very pro-active approach rather than ignoring the problems as they did for 10 years. They have been bringing in trail specialists every year for the past 3 years to help them learn about sustainable and natural trail design. Money and resources are a challenge for them as sports development is not their role in govt (thats LCSD and HAB). Most of the staff are more or less in the conservation field ... Plus MTB is still has a bad perception in some parts of the AFCD (park wardens who hand out tickets!) and with other user groups (hikers).

It will take time though. Perceptions of MTB won't change over night so we all have to keep focus on all the problem affecting the development of the activity and work together to counter them.

I highly recommend that you guys all sign up for the trail building workshop and meet the very nice Tai Lam AFCD staff in person.

I think that will hopefully be fixed pretty soon. From my recollection it looks like it's about 2-3km. In any event, it's slightly longer, and definitely more challenging, than the Tin Man blue trail.

The PDF's for the trails are currently inaccessible. I was wondering though, how long is this new trail? It looks like a nice ride.
