Team spirit

Do you like the idea of taking part in Action Asia’s 5 hour mountain bike marathon on Lamma, 23rd November, but didn’t think you had the stamina to race on arguably the most intense singletrack in Hong Kong. Well now you have the chance.

Realizing that not everyone wants to push themselves for five hours straight, and that some riders prefer shorter sprint style races, or just want to be part of the scene. Action Asia Events have now added two extra race lengths. The 3 hour and the 1.5 hour races, both with team relay and solo categories.

“We want to encourage all bikers to come and take part, not just the top riders, so we’ve added extra races.” Said race director Micheal Maddess. “Its important to encourage all levels of the sport if it is to grow and that is why we are offering the team relay.” He continues.

The race is to take place on what is commonly known as Project X on Pak Kok Shan, a six kilometer route that has a few new surprises, but riders breath a sigh of relief the most challenge section, the dog house loop will not be part of the course. This trail has already proven itself as as an excellent race venue, as it was the birth place of the original Lamma 5hr Enduro in 2006 and subsequent a HKCA race, it has even been suggested that it may even be picked for the Asian Championships hosted in Hong Kong next year.

“This is a wonderful trail built by local riders who knew what a real mountain bike trail should be like. It has something of everything, heart pounding climbs, rock gardens and killer downhill sections” Says Tom McGuinness a Lamma local and director of HKMBA

“This is a wonderful trail built by local riders who knew what a real mountain bike trail should be like. It has something of everything, heart pounding climbs, rock gardens and killer downhill sections” Says Tom McGuinness a Lamma local and director of HKMBA.

The race has principally two formats, the solo category for those masochists who enjoy punishing themselves to the limit and the team relay, were two riders team up to do alternative loops. “The team event is the way to go. You have time to get your breath back and give the body a rest between laps.” Says McGuinness.

Unlike most races that only last an hour or so the 5 hour marathon is also aimed at building a community, with the down time between laps Maddass hopes that riders will mingle and have a good time before going back out.

The race is expected to draw a large field of all experiences, “This may cause some problems passing as the trail is very tight and has few passing points. But I hope spirits will be high and riders will let the more competitive pass, after all it’s all about being out there and enjoying yourself.” Says Shaun Horrocks, one of the original Enduro course directors. That being said he thinks there will be no shortage of competitive spirit if any of the other races are to go by.

So if you want to push yourself to the limit  or just do a few laps, have a good time, cheer on the loony solo guys (and girls) and drink some beer then it may be worth going Lamma on the 23rd November.
