Getting the Hump

HYDRATION USED TO BE A SIMPLE CHOICE OF BOTTLES OR HYDRO PACK, NOW CAMELBAK GIVES US A THIRD OPTION

Sick and tired of losing your bottles or suffering a concussion every time you go over a bump because your backpack smacks you in the back of the head! And what about that chafing from the arm straps? Well Camelpak may have come up with the solution. Due out this month (Oct 15) and costing around HK$800 (US$100) the Raceback is essentially a lightweight breathable top with an integrated 1.5l bladder that is sewn into a back pocket.

The key to its success is the material of the vest. The top half is made from a proprietary compression fabric that is meant to stabilize the liquid, stopping it from sloshing around. It is also supposed to be chafe free!

Glimpses of the Racepak have already been seen at The Tour De France and it seemed to get riders approval, but there are still some important questions that need to be asked. Is it comfortable? Does the water stay cold? And how does it handle being thrown in the weekly wash? And how can you refill it without taking your shirt off? So maybe this isn't meant for everyone.

Even if the answers come back positive I can’t see it taking off for a typical days ride where you also need to carry a wallet, toolkit, and pump. But for a quick spin, or shorter events it could be the next breakthrough in hydration, that’s if you can get your hands on one here  ---  it’s hard to find  CamelBak products in HK!
